Nature Walks for the Whole Family
April 8, 2024The Logical Song and Nature Based Learning
April 16, 2024“Times have changed, but children haven’t. Young kids are on the same evolutionary path they’ve always been on. It’s our expectations that are off. We’re trying to make children ready for the next stage of life before natural development allows them to be ready.” -Heather Shumaker
Love, love, love this quote. How many of us have heard someone say “well, it’s a different time,” or “things are so much different from when we were kids,” and, although the statements are accurate, there is somewhat of an excuse built into the statements, as though a different date on the calendar would explain a change in the evolutionary process.
Children need the process of being children. They do not need more technology at the expense of playing in the mud; there must be recognition that both ends of the spectrum, technology and physical activity, are crucial for proper, well-developed learning to occur.
Or, as our old friend, Pooh, would say: “Life is a journey to be experienced, not a problem to be solved.”
