Butterfly gardens are a great way to bring life and color into your yard. Whether you have a lot of available space or just room for a few planters, planting a butterfly garden is a rewarding experience.

Butterfly gardens are full-sun gardens that are filled with plants that attract butterflies. These plants are generally nectar-producing flowers. Nectar-producing flowers are usually beautiful, so you have the double benefit of attracting butterflies and adding beauty to your yard.

Say hello to the Monarch Butterfly

The monarch population has been on a decline for nearly 2 decades. As of July 2022, our beloved migratory Monarch butterfly, scientifically known as Danaus plexippus, has officially entered the danger zone! Monarchs are now listed as endangered on the IUCN Red List.

One of the greatest threats to monarch butterflies is the loss of habitat, and creating habitat sanctuaries is how we can all help.

What a great activity for you and your children, and you can start this fall before we experience our first major freeze.  Read up on the specific plants that Monarchs are attracted to, the main one being Milkweed.  Sign on for the online newsletter “Monarch Journey,” and learn all about these magnificent creatures, and then involve your child in helping the Monarch to once again thrive.
