Growing Plants from Seeds with Your Child
January 8, 2025

Not so far-fetched, really, because our thoughts are turning to greenhouses and planting seeds, and the time for that is not that far away.

What a great activity for parents and their children, to make or buy a small greenhouse and learn together how to get a head-start on Spring planting.

Talking about making a small greenhouse, it does not have to cost hundreds of dollars to do.  Have you tried using plastic bottles for mini greenhouses?  Old windows and window frames?  How about building a cold frame out of unused lumber sitting around your property?  Make a greenhouse out of old pallets and some plastic sheeting.  Do you have old tent hoop frames? Stake those to the ground and drape plastic sheeting over the hoops. How about using bamboo poles, or flexible tree limbs to make the hoops?

February 15th is the target date to start planting in a greenhouse. What do you say? That gives you a month and a half to make a suitable mini greenhouse and decide what you are going to plant in it.  And may we suggest you start with radishes as one of your first plants? It’s hard to go wrong with radishes.
