Our purpose in writing this article is not to convince you that one type of preschool is better than the others, but simply to point out the options you have for your child.  In the end you, the parents, are the primary caregivers, you know your child best, and you should make the choice of preschool based on the individual needs of your child.

Here, then, are some of the options you have available to you:

  1. Montessori
  2. Reggio Emilia
  3. Waldorf
  4. High Scope
  5. Bank Street
  6. Parent Co-ops
  7. Religious

We will leave it to you to do the research and find out what each of these approaches offers you.  Sequoia’s Treehouse is a Reggio Emilia-inspired preschool, that is the option we know best, and that is the only one of these options we feel qualified to expound upon.

Sequoia’s Treehouse Children’s center is a Nature Inspired, Play Based Children’s Center based on the philosophy of early learning that has emerged from the pioneering collective work of a group of schools in Reggio Emilia, Italy. We are shaped by an emergent curriculum and anti-bias practices while encouraging principles of respect, responsibility and community through exploration and discovery in a supportive and enriching environment. Our spaces invite curiosity, exploration, creativity and discovery. Skills are learned which build confidence, independence and helps children understand their role as a family and community member.

The early years are a unique and exciting time as children are busy developing physically, emotionally, socially, and cognitively. Our program is play-based with some teacher-led activities and a variety of open-ended materials that allow children to build, create, pretend, and use their own ideas. Many of the materials are designed to help children develop the skills needed for later learning. Children have the opportunity to represent their ideas in different dimensions, scales and perspectives. Teachers facilitate their use of materials for more complex projects.
