Time Flies and the School Year is Rapidly Approaching

It had to happen sooner or later, right? The first serious heatwave of the 2024 summer has arrived, and we need to give some thought to how we can all stay cool, or at least as cool as possible, while attending summer camp.

And we are talking to you parents as well as to your children.

Here are some suggestions by the Medical Association regarding staying safe in extreme heat:

  • Avoid going out in the sun, especially between 12.00 noon and 3.00 p.m.
  • Drink sufficient water and as often as possible, even if not thirsty.
  • Wear lightweight, light-colored, loose, and porous cotton clothes.
  • Avoid strenuous activities when the outside temperature is high.
  • While travelling, carry water with you.
  • Avoid alcohol, tea, coffee and carbonated soft drinks, which dehydrates the body.
  • Move to the coolest room in the home, especially at night.
  • If it is not possible to keep your home cool, spend 2-3 hours of the day in a cool place (such as an air-conditioned public building).

Signs of heat-related health problems:

  • High body temperature (103°F or higher)
  • Hot, red, dry, or damp skin
  • Fast, strong pulse
  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Nausea
  • Confusion
  • Losing consciousness (passing out)

When in doubt, get help.  It may be a false alarm, but it’s better to feel a bit foolish, after raising alarm, than to suffer serious consequences for not raising an alarm.
