Do you live in the city? Do you love the taste of fresh, organic eggs? Would you like an activity which is fun for the whole family and which costs very little to do?

If so, raising backyard chickens is a fantastic activity for the whole family.

In the city you are allowed to have up to five hens.  Outside city limits, the sky is the limit. 😊

Chicks can be purchased in the spring from stores like Eastside Urban or Tractor Supply for between $3-$5 each.  Buy a bag of starter food, get a water receptacle, and build-buy a chicken coop.  If you choose to build one, it can be done cheaply using three large wooden pallets and some plywood.

The chicks will need a heating lamp and a large tub for a home for the first month or so, with wood shavings on the bottom.  Specific instructions can be found all over the internet, or you can ask your questions in the comment section of this article.

Your children will love watching the chicks grow.  Pro tip: have the children handle the chicks daily and you will have some very friendly, tame hens as the chicks grow older.

And the eggs? Delicious and infinitely better than those you purchase in the grocery store
