Normally, we cringe at all of the advertisements urging us to buy the latest gadgets, the latest clothing items, etc., etc., and etc.

However, we are a nature-based school, and we love gifts which stimulate children and encourage them to get outside and commune with nature.  Since we aren’t selling any of the following suggestions, we don’t feel too bad in posting them here on our blog . . . just in case you are short of ideas.

Camera

A small digital camera is a great gift for any kid and perfect for an outdoor explorer wanting to document their adventures. We love giving our kids a camera and seeing the world through their eyes. Not only do we get some great shots from a whole new perspective, but they’re super proud of their photos and it keeps them interested when out and about. However, I will say that we end up with an extraordinary amount of weird, accidental shots, so consider yourself warned.

Magnifying glass

We have suggested this before, but it is worth mentioning it again.  The Web of Life begins with the micro and moves to the macro, and seeing the micro, for the first time magnified, is an awesome experience.

Microscope

Talk about micro . . . you haven’t lived until you’ve seen a mosquito through the eyes of a microscope. Those are nasty looking buggers.

Grow butterflies

Did you know you can buy a butterfly enclosure and the live caterpillars, giving your child the opportunity to raise butterflies and then release them into the garden? So cool!

Gardening kit

Put one together yourself, or purchase one pre-made, it’s a great way to get your child interested in growing their own food.

We’ve got a thousand of these suggestions, but these are our favorites.
