Hello!  My name is Joe and I have been the Director of Sequoia’s Treehouse since we opened in 2015. Before that,  I spent 12 summers working at an outdoors & arts summer camp in Virginia, first as a Counselor and then as administrative staff.

I also worked at a different childcare center in Olympia for 4 years, the first 2 in an infant room and the second 2 in different classrooms from ages 2-6.  I have a bachelor’s degree in education from The Evergreen State College.

In 2018 I visited Reggio Emily, Italy, to participate in a week-long training and immersion program to learn about their approach to ECE.  I was inspired by the celebration of children’s creativity and intelligence, and the high regard the city had for the profession of Early Childhood Education.

I believe that education which honors the rich inner world of each child, and offers examples of community, can make a profound impact on growing people’s lives. I cannot imagine a more fulfilling job than providing meaningful early childhood education experiences in a nature-based setting. I am especially drawn to creating learning environments that allow for creativity, discovery, ease, and inclusion.

I enjoy playing string instruments, cooking soup, canoeing, and learning about plants in the wild.
