When you are looking for a preschool for your child, whether it is the first time or you are switching schools, keep in mind that there are many different educational philosophies to choose from, even at a young age. We will share with you,  now, a setting where the child is viewed as capable of steering and directing their own learning process, and in fact is allowed to do so, the Reggio Emilia approach to early education.

The Reggio Emilia Approach

The Reggio Emilia approach is an early education or preschool philosophy focusing on four key principles of a child’s natural development. The approach is child-centered and directed, working from the base belief that education must make sense to the student, even at an early age, in order for it to be effective.

A child’s point of view is embraced and respected, and they are encouraged to follow their own path. It is believed that curiosity, plus potential, will foster an interest in learning, allowing children to learn and succeed long-term. That curiosity and potential will set the path upon which learning will occur.

The Guiding Principles

Here are the four principles of the Reggio Emilia philosophy:

  • Children must have some say over what they learn; additionally, the senses play a big role in the learning process.
  • Children engage with their senses to help them learn and fully process something.
  • Children are encouraged to interact with other children and explore the world through material items and relationships.
  • Children should be encouraged to always express themselves and be given infinite means and opportunities to do so.

Sequoia’s Farm and Forest School Program was founded based upon these and similar nature-based educational philosophies.  We invite you to call us to ask your questions, at which time we can arrange to have one of our staff meet with you and take you for a tour of the Farm.
