What Do You See?
April 2, 2024

Setting aside the standard education for a moment, there are many more lessons, which we like to call “life lessons,” which children will learn while attending farm, nature based school They are:

  • You reap what you sow
  • Animals deserve compassion
  • Responsibility
  • Don’t be afraid to get dirty
  • The origins of food
  • The relationship between nature and man

Let’s look at each of these in a bit more detail.

You reap what you sow

Most children grow up with the idea of going to a grocery store when it is time to restock the kitchen with food. That is the extent of their food knowledge.  Working on a farm, or attending a farm school, gives a new meaning and perspective regarding food.  Planting seeds, and watching those seeds become healthy food, that is the greatest lesson we can teach a child about the food they eat.

Animals deserve compassion

Animals are synonymous with farms, and farms synonymous with animals.  It’s been that way since the beginning of farm history, and it always will be.  Every single day on a farm school means interacting, in some way, with farm animals, and a new appreciation grows from that interaction, and appreciation fosters compassion.

Responsibility

Nothing happens on a farm unless the “farmer” makes it happen. From feeding the farm animals to planting the seeds to preparing the soil for planting, farm kids learn responsibility and the importance of responsibility.

Don’t be afraid to get dirty

Seriously, this might be the best life lesson learned on farms: it’s okay to get dirty. In fact, it is encouraged!  Need we say more? The kid in all of us will fully understand this sentiment.

The relationship between nature and man

This, really, sums it all up.  We believe that man must understand the relationship between mankind and nature, a relationship of cohesion, a nurturing bond in which man, and nature, thrive as long as the needs of each are met.

Oh, sure, a child can read about these “life lessons,” but a true appreciation for them can only be attained when you live on a farm, work on a farm, and play on a farm.
